Learning Activities

1. Safe schools are the responsibility of everyone that works in a school. With the school shootings that occurred over the last few years, school safety is on the minds of most people. Read the Gun-Free Schools Act from the Florida Department of Education website.

In addition to guns, there are many other threats to educating students in a safe, non-threatening school environment.  Visit the School Discipline & Climate website at the Florida Department of Education website.  Read the information from links concerning positive behavior support, unsafe schools choice option, and zero tolerance.

Task: Now that you have read these articles, take a few minutes to reflect on how you can make your school safer.  Specifically, what are your school's options for students who continually misbehave, are victims of bullying, or bring firearms to school?

2. Visit the Safe, Disciplined, and Drug Free Schools web site to see what programs are available to help ensure safe schools.

3. There are strategies that can enhance a safe learning environment. Read this memo from the Florida Department of Education.
