Agricultural Literacy

Agricultural literacy is a common buzzword heard in agricultural education circles.  What does it mean?  As part of this lesson, you will explore various state agricultural literacy programs as well as national initiatives.  As an agricultural educator, you must determine what your role will be in developing a more agriculturally literate society.

1. Identify current agricultural literacy programs.

2. Define agricultural literacy.

3. Identify the agricultural education teacher's role in developing an agriculturally literate society.

4. Develop an agricultural literacy plan.



1.Visit the following Ag in the Classroom sites.

2. Visit the Space Ag in the Classroom site.  This site was developed in partnership by the University of Florida, NASA, and USDA.

3. The National FFA Organization has an agricultural literacy program called Food For America.  Please visit this site.

4.  Read the article A Definition and the Concepts of Agricultural  Literacy.
 


1. Develop an agricultural literacy plan for your agriculture program.  Identify the target audience, who will be involved, a brief description of the activities with estimated completion dates.
